Reflective Essay On Human Experience

Throughout the semester as a class we have read multiple forms of readings varying in style and meaning. The different types of readings were meant to enrich our minds of knowledge and shape our human experience. After reading some of the forms of literature, such as Walden and Civil Disobedience, A year of Magical Thinking and the Auto Biography of an Ex-Colored Man my mind has expanded to consider different parts of life. I think about the way I live my life and the things I do as a human being. The course as a whole has allowed me to expand my mind, think about different parts of life and nature that I would not pay attention to on a daily basis.

The novel, A Year of Magical Thinking written by Joan Didion describes a story about death. The famous saying, “live life like todays your last day alive” ran across my mind after reading the novel because it made me question the meaning of life. Joan Didion lost her husband and daughter within a short period of time, everything that was important to her, gone in a blink of an eye. Talking about the novel in class got me thinking about death and how fast a death can flip someone’s world upside down. Like Joan Didion stated, “Life changes in the instant. The ordinary instant” (Didion 97). It brought back memories of when family member passed away and the feeling that you have in the pit of your stomach when you here the news. The thought made me think about the bigger picture, the idea of moving on with your life and how you do not take a single day for granted.
