“The moment my legs begin to move my thoughts begin to flow,” Henry David Thoreau. As days get shorter, hikes get longer on the Jessie Gerard Trail. Over a hundred trips to the summit and the view only gets better. When talking about hiking it is common to ask what is your favorite trail. This is mine. With a scenic view over the farmington river while also looking west for miles, this is a trail that will always have a spot in my heart.
Everyday we climb to unreachable heights. When you start the trail you pick up the blue blazes and you are on your way. As you climb all 199 stone steps you recognize fatigue and as you look over to the right you feel a chilling breeze coming from the mossed soaked rocks as a small stream runs down in a cascading manner. Looking to your left you notice the tree line thinning out and the thought of curiosity takes over your mind, as your brain wonders as to not what was behind, but asks what lies ahead on this journey. Senses take over and begin to experience the scent of fallen dried up leaves, and the smell of water evaporating off the rocks from the previous rain. Never taking serious notice of the smell, at first it is startling but then breathes begin to become deeper and deeper as your lungs begin to take in the sweet smell of nature something that you can only discover in the mountains. Without out warning, the trail levels out and you are now standing on the hardest rock that at no point under the roughest storm would ever break and give way. As you take a seat on this rock you look out and realize this is the one time you should ever be looking down. Instead of staring down on your phone or computer, you are staring down on river and West River Road thinking that all these cars are driving by missing everything that the town of Barkhamsted has to
