Henry Analysis

Henry The movie Henry is about a life changing experience. His id in the beginning changes after a tragic incident into a superego. Henry is a lawyer who is not involved with his family and everything he does has to be about work. One night on a trip to get a pack of cigarettes from the gas station, he gets shot by a robber and it changes everything about him. After the shooting, Henry is in the hospital for months learning how to walk and talk all over again. Henry’s natural state is his superego; however, his id was the face he had because of the people he was surrounded by during business. In the beginning, Henry was an arrogant person who only cared about himself. He did everything in his power to make the most money for his family, but along the way he became a different person. One night, Henry had yelled at his daughter and has made her really upset. Later when he came home after his wife informed him of how upset Rachel (his daughter) was, he went to talk to her. His id was tearing his family apart and hurting everyone else around him. When he finally was able to go home after his incident, he realized he did not like the person he was before he got shot. He was selfish and changed into the most caring person in just a few months. He figures out all the old things he had done in his life and does not want to be a part of that person anymore. Freud’s theory of mind in relation to this story, is very relatable. He explains a person’s changing characteristics that all human being’s share. Henry has a drastic change to show an example of what his theory looks like. Freud’s theory applies to everyone because everyone has a natural id and superego.
