Heck defines it by saying that it is a type of subculture that arises out of a frustrating or conflictual situation with a dominant culture. Each definition is very similar and very different. I think that Henslin and Heck run very similar when it comes to talking about the group being separate than the big group. I find it weird that we all come from one group and go out and either make our own and surround ourselves with the people we would like to, or we go out and find a group we would like to be a part of. I guess it goes back to the concept of the “in group” and the “out group”. They also agree on the idea that it is drawn by the culture whether it be good or bad. They do differ however; they differ in the sense that Heck states that it only comes from a “frustrating or conflictual situation.” Counterculture and subculture are very similar, I think they are very similar in the sense that they are groups and that they form and live according to their culture. I love being a Roman Catholic, and love the people that I associate with when I am at church. The group is definitely considered a subculture when it comes time to compare them to the whole world which as all different views and types of religions. We are group of people with unique cultural patterns, we all live with the same idea of God. Some things we do is say the rosary, which may separate us from many other religions, we also praise our saints while other religions only praise God. Although we are different in our beliefs and worshipping we do share a lot with all of the other religions. We all worship a high being, whoever it may be. Our unique patterns that we do every weekend in church do effect the total life of members in the church. The way we worship similarly every weekend provides something every religion does not. Our biggest thing in church is what you learn. When I go to church with my family my mom always asks “what we learned or got from this morning’s homily?” The way we go about our mass is definitely a way of learning, not that other religions are not, but being catholic we often read about certain people making mistakes and learning from
