The treatment depends on the severity of hemophilia. For small cuts or scrapes applying pressure and bandaging the wound can help. In order to stop prolonged bleeding, there are therapies to help depending on the type of hemophilia. For mild hemophilia A, injections of the hormone desmopressin (DDAVP) into the veins can stimulate the release of clotting factors which can stop the bleeding. For moderate to severe hemophilia A or B an infusion from donated blood or genetically engineered products called recombinant clotting factors may be needed to stop bleeding. If the bleeding is serious, the patient may need to receive clotting factor infusions to prevent bleeding. If bleeding is severe multiple infusions may be necessary. For hemophilia C, in Europe there is the missing clotting factor, XI that is available for injection. However, in North America, plasma infusions can be used to stop bleeding. There are also ongoing treatment that doctors may recommend. The first one is the regular infusions of DDAVP which can prevent bleeding. With regular infusions. It can reduce the time spent in hospitals after surgery and it can reduce damage to joints. There are also clot-preserving medication (antifibirinolytics) that can be taken to prevent clots from breaking down as easily. Another medication that can used are fibrin sealants. They ca be applied directly to wounds to promote clotting and healing. There are severe cases where bleeding has damaged joints, the only treatment is physical therapy to increase movements to prevent the joints from becoming frozen or badly damaged. However, if the bleeding damaged the joint, then it might need to be replaced with an artificial

This blood contains red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma, just like normal blood. But it also has lots of hematopoietic (blood-forming) stem cells that are similar to the ones found in bone marrow. This is why cord blood is now being used on an experimental basis as an alternative to bone marrow transplants for patients with blood and immune system diseases and genetic or metabolic diseases. The most common diseases that have been treated so far are leukemia and inherited diseases such as those…
