Since I am currently working in hemodialysis unit, I would like to do research in this field of nursing. The infection control is a major concern on this specialty unit. Protecting patients to acquire the infection and cross infection contamination is a top priority considering the patients compromised illness and impaired immunity.
The beginning of this subject is the different access for end stage renal disease or ESRD patients, such AV fistula, AV graft and tunneled catheter are all major source of infection for the patient if not properly accessed. Additional studying in this area on the reasons why there are still more incidents of access infections that are presented to emergency room and physicians clinic is worrisome. There are so many researchers have been completed to prevent infection, however, the additional study in this area will be beneficial to patients. This could promote better results and findings to lessen the incidents of infections.
The cleaning and disinfection of the hemodialysis machine after each treatment is essential. ESRD patients’ bloodstream is constantly exposed to mechanical machine, thus are a possible cross contamination among patients that may be carriers of HIV, Hepatitis B Virus and other viruses causing hepatitis. Contamination of environmental surfaces with blood from such patients may therefore increase the risk that personnel or other patients in the Hemodialysis unit will acquire such communicable disease. Reviewing and updates on the test results, particularly Hepatitis panel and HIV on each patient are crucial.
The medical staff protection to acquired infection is the top priority as well. Just to mention a few of the possible ways to get infected are the needle stick, blood and fluid splash. This are could be prevented by using the proper personal protective equipment or the …show more content…
