Part of what draws me to Pitzer is their emphasis on their core values. Not only should they be an approach to education but also an approach to life. Like many others, I like to think that I will be able to change the world one day. For now, I know that I have to start small and make an effort to help my community by making my own small changes.
Giving back to my community has always felt like a social responsibility to me. I live in a rural area, which can be isolating at times, so feeling close and more connected to my community is important to me. While working at the hospital, I have learned a lot about the medical field as well as various social skills that I would have otherwise not learned until much later in life. At the time I was the president of French club and my idea of changing the French club for the better resulted in a whole new club. The hope for the foreign language club was to promote intercultural understanding and pair it with learning a new language. Though the two main language classes at my school are French and Spanish, the school also has an annual Language Day that emphasizes the multiculturalism of our school where each can share food from their culture or other aspects such as dance or a tradition. I emceed the cultural performances on Language Day this past year where we had song performances in various languages as well as a play and some dances. The club has allowed me to explore my interests as well as given me responsibility because I am in charge of planning our community service activities and organizing our different school related functions.
