Hematocrit is a test that essentially test the total RBC’s volume in the blood. A small blood sample is extracted from the subject and the sample is then centrifuge to separate heavy components from lighter components. Typical that means that the heavy RBC’s should be compact at the bottom, while the lighter and less dense plasma so be at the top. Once separate the individual components can be accurately measured and assessed for determining the percentage of the RBC’s in the sample. If one knows the overall size of the sample once can measure the overall PCV percentage to determine the HCT. The equation and solution for Maggie’s hematocrit is as follows; 7.1/20x100= 35.5%.
