During this winter quarter, the unit that I really liked the most was the one based on empathy because that unit made me think about more on why I need to help others in need. When I read the article “The Singer Solution to World Poverty” by Peter Singer really helped me realize that I do not need to be spending money on luxuries but instead donating that money to charities. As he states, “Again, the formula is simple: whatever money you’re spending on luxuries, not necessities, should be given away”. I was motivated by this article because I realized that not all individuals have the same advantage as I do. I have the chance to get an education, have a shelter and buy luxuries that others do not. If I have the chance to teach or help others, I would because I think that those individuals would really appreciate the help. The program is called EPIC which stands for Educational Participation in Communities, which gives access to college students to help out “communities throughout the Los Angeles area”. I did not know community service was available here at the school until a member from the EPIC program arrived at the class. She informed about all the opportunities were student could volunteer to contribute with the community. I really think that this program is very helpful because students can gain carrier experience as well as helping out the community.
