Helping Babies Breathe Case Study

The Ronald McDonald House (RMHC) is an organization that was developed to help families and their children while they are in need during medical crises. During times of extreme medical need, the RMHC assists in finding and creating medical programs, places to live, and making medical care more widely accessible throughout the world. RMHC is widely known for their Family Room programs and giving aid to families in times of need; however, they are known for much more. Each year, the Ronald McDonald House Charities distribute grants to nonprofit medical organizations that are focused on the similar values that the RMHC was developed upon. According to the World Health Organization, there are over one million newborn deaths due to birth asphyxia, or the fatally harmful void of oxygen during the birthing process (Helping babies breathe, 2016). In the Eastern Cape of Africa, the population has the highest perinatal mortality rates in Africa due to aspects like birth asphyxia (Helping babies breathe grant, 2015). Through HBB, the individuals involved with childbirth go through training in order to learn ways to save the lives of babies during the first critical moment after birth, known as the Golden Minute. After the completion of training, these nurses then go on to create sustainable training programs themselves in order to ensure the practices are used in the long term (Helping babies breathe, 2016). Today, the original HBB program has branched into a larger organization known as Helping Babies Survive (HBS), which includes many more components in addition to HBB.
