In the Eastern Cape of Africa, the population has the highest perinatal mortality rates in Africa due to aspects like birth asphyxia (Helping babies breathe grant, 2015). Through HBB, the individuals involved with childbirth go through training in order to learn ways to save the lives of babies during the first critical moment after birth, known as the Golden Minute. After the completion of training, these nurses then go on to create sustainable training programs themselves in order to ensure the practices are used in the long term (Helping babies breathe, 2016). Today, the original HBB program has branched into a larger organization known as Helping Babies Survive (HBS), which includes many more components in addition to HBB.
