Helping A Homeless Person

Decent Essays
When you learn about someone elses life and what they've been through it helps give you an understanding about yourself. Lets say you're talking to someone who's homeless; after hearing their story about how they became homeless (whether it be from bad decisions or just bad luck) you might feel a greater sense of appreciation for what you have. Hearing other peoples stories gives us a different aspect to our own life. You might come to realize that you're either a better off person than you thought or even worser off. Hearing other stories might also help you reflect on your own. That will help you become a better person.

I think Barbara Ascher is trying to address the possible various reasons that people have to help homeless people. She also makes a point that compassion is a learned behavior not an innate behavior. As she illustrates in her examples, people may support the homeless because of fear. Some people judge others by their appearances and dressing, so when they see people with different dressing than usual they consider them as hurting people and they develop fear. In the first example, the woman gave the man a dollar to get rid of him which is not empathetic.…

While there are more than a few groups of people who experience homelessness in the United States and other parts of the world different ways, their homelessness is usually characterized by lack of stable housing coupled with extreme poverty (Henslin, 2013). I realized this after reading the author’s research concerning the homeless population in the United States. However, in my career as a human services professional, I would like to work with the mentally ill and the runaways. The mentally ill are people who’re rendered homeless upon discharge from mental hospitals, or rather persons with mental illnesses who become homeless due to lack of a family or lack of treatment for their problems. The first possible intervention that I would undertake…

Through the life story, I can get to know that how people will react in the same situation. Like how people study in their childhood, how people fall in love, how they treat their friends and family. These experiences can broaden my horizon and let me know that I still have a lot of things to study. If people refuse to understand other’s life story, I will be locked in my own world, without knowing anything that happened in the outside world. People will become more and more selfish cause they only care about what they did.…

Volunteering at the homeless shelter is one of my favorite things to do. A few weeks ago, on a serene Saturday morning, my family and I volunteered at Loaves and Fishes. It was special to see just the sheer amount of people who had come out to volunteer on that Saturday. If you think about, they could’ve been doing anything on that Saturday morning. Yet, they decided to help give back to their community.…

Nevertheless, I tried to convince myself everybody here was equal, and that I was not superior to the men here were.…
