We 're fortunate to be living in a period where everybody has the right to speak freely and is dealt with just as, but in the past that was not the case for slaves. Slavery started in the 16th century and spread throughout North America by the 17th and 18th century. Essentially, Europeans used slavery to dehumanize people that were under the social status line. Many slaves endured a horrific life whether it was working in extreme labor or being abused physically and verbally. The memoirs of slaves such as Tom Elice shows us personal experiences of the slaves that were able to escape and start over successfully which gives us something to be hopeful for in the future.…

Recently many articles have been brought to my attention of the horrible condition and treatment of the slaves in this country. Story after story, article after article are shown to me by my colleagues, these are disheartening to say the least. One story has recently caught my heart more than the rest, this story is the story of Mr. Frederick Douglass. Frederick Douglass was working for a man renting him from his owner, he was worked to near death and upon falling from exhaustion was hit on the head and left to bleed to death or get up and work. He decided to escape back to his master he braved the conditions bleeding, desperate and in pain.…

One of the first reasons on how slaves were dehumanized was that Americans brought their slaves to the United States chained up like animals and against their own will. They would fit multiple slaves in ships with not a lot of room, without giving them an adequate supply of food and water to live off of. According to the book, The Interesting Narrative of The Life of Olaudah Equiano, they were chained so close that they weren’t able to move around. As these slaves were chained up and little room to move they had to use the restroom on themselves and also eat in the same place causing the slaves to receive diseases due to all the toxins in their human droppings. Those that survived during the long ship ride were what the Americans needed.…

Since the beginning of the slave trade, its was set that slaves were not to be treated fairly for they were mere peasants whose only worth was to serve their masters. However, according to Created Equal: A History of the United States (Vol. 1), around the1660s there was a change in statuses amongst slaves. Before the 1660s, Europeans had set a sort of guide to be able to exploit slaves in the New World colonies through physical punishment, psychological control(e.g. Shaving hair, threatening to separate families by selling them to crueler masters, repressing their faith, etc.), and legal distinctions(e.g in 1630 slavery was transmitted through genetics, meaning, slaves gave birth to slaves). Consequently, slave population started to dwindle leading European landlords to recur to indentured servants which settles the start of the division between indentured servants and slaves.…

Leigh Seeley February 22, 2018 In the 19th century, black men, women and children, commonly known as slaves, were subjected to terrible treatment by those who imprisoned them. From the paternalistic attitudes, to the poor living conditions and then finally, the resistance to the barbaric practice, slavery was a common (but horrifying) way to live life. Paternalism was based around an agrarian hierarchy where the master is at the top and is responsible for supporting all lower ranks (wives and children of the male slaves). This system helped the slaveowners to justify slavery because it hid the brutal reality of slavery and allowed slave owners to think of themselves as responsible and kind people.…

I have had many bad jobs in my life, but none worse than working at Wal-Mart. I was a cart pusher at Wal-Mart for almost two and a half years between the two times I worked there. The working conditions were terribly unsafe, the management and fellow associates were bad, and the job expectations were unreal. When I worked as a cart pusher the first time I was employed at Wal-Mart we were expected to work in very unsafe conditions such as: thunderstorms, when under heat advisories, and without proper equipment. I was always told by management to “Suck it up” or “It’s your job deal with it” when I would try to discuss these unsafe working conditions with anyone.…

One International Non Governmental Organization that I always endeavor to write about and advocate for is the Walk Free Foundation. I have a personal interest for this organization and over the past two years, worked with their Local Representatives as a volunteer. Article 3-21 of the Universal Declaration list, enshrines that all people are entitled to civil and political rights and the rights that are articulated in these sections covers the right to life, liberty and security and freedom from slavery and torture and inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment only to mention but a few. Contemporary slavery, also known as modern slavery, refers to the institutions of slavery that continue to exist in the present day.…

The twenty-first century is a time period of changes and improvements, but one thing that never seems to change is slavery. It is sad that human intelligence did not develop like the development of technology because if it did people would know how to treat another human being. Today, millions of people are enslaved worldwide and it increases from year to year (Gladstone). Enslavement exists in all 167 countries, but five Asian countries: India, China, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Uzbekistan have over half of the enslaved people population (Koren). India is the top country with over eighteen million people enslaved (Koren).…
