Helminths Parasite

Decent Essays
Helminths are worm-like parasites. They are grouped and separated by their general external shape and the host organ they inhabit. The definitive classification is based on egg, larvae, and adult stage. There are three types of helminths worms the Trematodes (Flukes), Cestodes (Tapeworm), and the Nermatodes (Roundworm). This parasite unlike lice or fleas lives inside their host. They receive nourishment, and protection of their host while disrupting nutrition absorption which causes weakness and disease to the host. They can live inside humans as well as animals. The worm’s offspring are usually found in poorly cooked meats, specially pork, wild fish, beef, also in contaminated water, feces, and in areas of food preparation with poor hygiene.

Within an article called “They Might Be Gross, But Intestinal Worms Can Actually Be Good For You” by Dr. William Parker of Duke University, a new perspective on the potential uses of intestinal worms, or helminths, as they are referred to, is given to readers. He argues that these creatures can actually be beneficial to the human health, along with the health of many other animals. Dr. Parker constructs support for his argument by using ethical appeal, logical appeal, and primary resources throughout the document. Parker continuously reinforces his argument by using ethical appeal in the article. Although there are many examples of its usage, one prominent use is when he stated, “(In) my lab, working with a Duke University colleague…” (Parker).…

Trichinellosis is a parasitic disease caused by Trichinella spp., a species of intestinal nematodes that reside as encysted larvae in muscle tissue and are released upon human digestion of infected raw or undercooked meat (Gottstein and others 2009). Domestic pigs are the primary source of infection for this pathogen making uncooked pork products, such as raw-fermented sausages, at risk for containing Trichinella spp. (Gottstein and others 2009). The symptoms of this disease include: facial swelling, diarrhea, headaches, weakness, fever, and if left untreated it can be fatal (CDC 2012). Since this represents a hazard to human health, pork that is received at a meat processing plant must be treated for Trichinella spp.…

The worms finally migrate to the urinary tract, causing blood in the urine (hematuria), and after the eggs hatch, they cause severe anemia, urinary infection and liver ailments. Ancient Egyptians never suspected a virtually invisible worm caused these problems, because of that all they could do was try to relieve the discomfort. A potion consisting of the tail of a mouse mixed with onion, meal, honey and water, all strained before using, then drunk for four days, was used specifically by the medical…

Parasite Rex is a great book for anyone taking a parasitology course or anyone who is looking for interesting theories on evolution and how today’s organisms and their revolutionary mechanisms have come to be. Carl Zimmer is able to make parasites relevant to many more people outside of the parasitology field with his engaging anecdotes and ideas. I love Zimmer's style of writing. He describes parasites as a puzzle; revealing little details about their impressive features and their interaction with their host organism. Even Zimmer's layout of Parasite Rex has meaning and makes his major points even more meaningful.…
