After analyzing the medical records of more than 6,267 individuals who had experienced a brain injury after a biking accident, they found only a little over 25 percent wore a helmet. When researchers compared this to cyclists who wore a helmet, they discovered that those who wear a helmet have a 58 percent decreased likelihood of undergoing a serious traumatic brain injury after an accident. In addition, they had 59 percent less chances that they would die, and they had 61 percent less likelihood that surgeons would need to remove part of their skull.

Brain bleeding becomes a serious issue after an injury with biking. What researchers wanted to uncover was whether wearing a helmet would reduce the risk of head bleeds when people experience a biking accident. Does the helmet protect people from this. Up until the age of 70, researchers saw how people steadily increased with wearing helmet, but after the age of 70, it went down for some reason. The older a person gets, the greater need there is for safety equipment when riding a bike because they are not as steady. In a different study, they found that a lot of the fatalities related to older people riding bicycles, whereas it used to be the younger crowd that had the most fatalities. As a person gets older, one of the things that they can do to be safer while cycling is to buy an adult tricycle because it eliminates balance issues.
