This paper will start by establishing a solid image of Hell from primal and ancient times; the first, or early, view of Hell. Then this paper will convey a solid image of Hell as it is now. Afterwards this paper will be exploring the time in between this point A and point B to find the key changes in theme and appearance. With appropriate research, this paper will cite evidence relating to these shifts.
Hell, as humans know it, is a place where human souls that did not lead a good life on earth reside after death. However, God did not create Hell for sinful humans to be sentenced to. It is recorded in the Genesis that God first created Heaven and Earth in the beginning. (Genesis 1:1) Thereafter God created the heavenly beings. Which included

We can get a sense of the picture of Hell from this quote from the Bible, “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8) By knowing the type of people that are sent down there can help provide a better idea. Also note that there is burning sulfur and a fiery lake, which is a contrasting theme; water is the giver of life and prosperity, and fire symbol of destruction and pain. Again there is more physical description of Hell in the book of Revelation, the text reads, “And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.” (Revelation 20:10) Although this quote basically sends the same message as the prior one we can gain a bit more information about the physical presence in Hell. On a side note, brimstone is the same thing as sulfur. When the text mentions that they will be tormented day and night, the reader can conclude that there is a sense of time in Hell. And to go on from that there may even be a sun or source of light, how else would entities distinguish between day and night. The central theme that is apparent in most quotes from the Bible concerning Hell is that there will be eternal punishment for those sent

What makes Hell such a dreaded, terrifying place? In part of the text Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God, Jonathon Edwards makes the observation that anyone who has not been a born again Puritan Christian will burn for all eternity in the pit known as Hell. To some, it is a dreaded, feared place, but to others it is fictional and incites no fear. In 1741 in Enfield, Connecticut, John Edwards delivered a horrifyingly powerful sermon to the Puritan congregation about the dangers, and reality of Hell. This sermon grew in popularity and led the means for personal reformation in Puritans of that era.…

. “Now,” said the demon, in a voice that carried with it no sorrow, no relish, only a dreadful flat resignation, “you will be tortured.” Like this quote, the voice of the demon is created through simple, short sentences but very descriptive. These descriptions are not what we usually think of hell because other readings and movies have embedded the image of hell as flames all around you while you are burning for your sins. Gaiman decided to go against this approach and decided to describe hell as empty with no flames, just you sitting there with only the demon while you are tortured by having to live through your sins again.…

The people who willingly choose to go to hell are allowed to. These rebels, who according to the freewill given by God chose to not accept God’s mercy, as Lewis said In The Problem of Pain, the doors of Hell are locked on the inside. This means that God isn’t some tyrant waiting for people to sin and then throw them in a lake of fire while locking the doors from the outsides. It means, God gave a choice to people to go to Hell if they chose not to believe in him, the locks on the inside also means that the damned can leave at any time, they have to ask for forgiveness and God will forgive…

I agree with Marilyn McCord Adams’ assertion that Hell is a bigger problem than evil. For the purposes of this essay, “Hell” will refer to the fire and brimstone or “Traditional Hell” (Adams, p. 276). Adams’ position will be elaborated upon by first discussing the non-fatalistic aspects of the problem of evil. Next, her position will be strengthened by inspecting Richard Swinburne’s theodicies. Lastly, an examination of Adams’ discussion on human agency will support her view that Hell is a bigger problem than evil.…

The Inferno has influenced people around the world for almost 700 years. Most people think of Hell as a place where you don’t want to go and is miserable. This is because the Inferno is the basis of what we think of hell. The Inferno is a poem that Dante Alighieri wrote in 1320 about his fictional journey through Hell. The Inferno is the first of three sections of the Divine Comedy and would become one of the most famous books of its time.…

I found it interesting that Dante’s inferno paints a picture of what people thought was immoral and how they perceived hell. For example, thieves are in the eighth ring of hell, but heretics are only in the 6th ring. I would have assumed that in the 1300’s the emphasis on Christianity was much more prominent, since the church held vast political power and wealth, I was surprised that the thieves were thought lower of than Heretics. In addition, I had always thought of purgatory as a modern idea. I noticed that although Jesus and Mary are referred to indirectly, they are never called by their names.…

When he began working on The Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri likely had no idea that it would become widely regarded as one of the most graphic depictions of hell ever written. This epic, narrative, and satirical poem is written in the first person, and follows Dante as he loses his way in a forest and travels through the circles of Hell. Even in the present day it is still read in classrooms, as well as a video game and animated movie based on the epic poem. This epic poem has not only been iconic in the present day however, as many people after Dante’s death drew inspiration from his writings just as he drew inspiration from Christianity. Dante invokes elements of fantasy, history, symbolism, and religion all into one epic work.…

If God is all powerful, how does one argue against him? First, God’s authority needs to be taken into question. If all is not as God says it is, then reality is whatever one makes of it. Milton tackles this question in Paradise Lost. In Christian tradition Satan is the first to go against God.…
