Helicopter Parents: Please Fly Away Everyone knows a Helicopter parent when he sees one. Helicopter parenting became very popular in the 1980’s, as parents began to shift their outlook and became more overprotective in child rearing. Parents struggled with how to raise children on top of balancing work and household duties. Helicopter parenting allowed nervous parents to be hands-on in every detail of raising their children, while protecting the children from an unsafe world. This obsession to control every aspect of a child’s life from childhood through adulthood has later hindered the children in its social and emotional development. Helicopter parents have created a society full of young adults who are not prepared to thrive in today’s market. A helicopter parent refers to a family member who “hovers” or takes control of any challenge or situation that needs to be solved for their child. In their magazine article “The Fragile Generation”, Lenore Skenazy and Jonathan Haidt stated “Yet modern child-rearing practices and laws seem all but designed to cultivate this lack of preparedness. There’s the fear that everything children see, do, or lick will hurt them.” Some new parents may not be prepared for the job set before them. Parents have many anxieties and fears of their own when it comes to raising families and providing their children the lifestyle they deserve. However, parents must work a forty-hour a week job, keep up a household and raise a family. Some parents may feel strained in various areas including marriage and household chores. Hovering is an outlet for Helicopter parents to control the fears that consume them as a parent.
