Parenting practices are shown to influence the development of social wariness in toddlers, preschoolers and young children, which can then progress into college age students.

The self-determination theory states that there are three basic needs that are innate to all human beings and their proper development, the first being a need for autonomy or feeling free to make your own choices. Secondly, the need for competence or feeling confident in one’s abilities and accomplishments (Deci and Ryan 2008). Lastly the need for relatedness or the feeling of being involved in a generally caring relaionship(s). If all the criteria are not met it can result in lower levels of satisfaction in life. A recent study conducted by a group of students at the University of Mary Washington found that “an inappropriate level of parental behavioral control are associated with negative child outcomes.” Such as lower feelings of autonomy, competence, and relatedness.
