Helen Keller International Sierra Leone first began in 2002. HKI-SL was provided with capital support by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), NIPPON Foundation and Merck. This funding aimed to equip HKI-SL with the tools to provide technical and financial assistance to the Ministry of Health and Sanitation (MoHS), along with being provided with funding from Irish Aid for nutritional based purposes. The general objective of the SLMS was to regulate the prevalence and seriousness of micronutrient deficiencies and to determine the nutritional and health status of children aged 6-59 months and women of reproductive age (pregnant and non-pregnant women aged 15-49 years). The micronutrients being examined include Vitamin A, vitamin B12, iron, folate and Iodine deficiencies and associated factors among the targeted population.
