Sir Arthur Evans worked as a curator and archaeology professor before leading excavation at a site on the island of Crete. Arthur, however, became famous and well known for his excavation. His findings led to the discovery of an ancient civilization, which also made further discoveries that helped with the ancient Mediterranean world. Evans was an extremely distinguished scholar who was also the curator of the Ashmolean Museum, University of Oxford, from 1884 to 1908 and had also became an extraordinary professor of archaeology at Oxford. Evans was very interested in ancient coins and the writing on stone seals from Crete. This attracted him to the island for the first time in 1894. In the following year he decided to publish Cretan Pictographs and Phoenician Script, which described his finding on the land for his first time. In 1896 he suggested that the Mycenaean civilization of the Greek mainland originated from Crete, which was a big step to prehistory. Sir Arthur Evans work was one of archaeology’s major achievements and advanced the study of European and eastern Mediterranean
