Heinrich Himmler became head of the SS in 1929. During this time, the SS were only Hitler's bodyguards. Himmler saw the SS as an opportunity to create an army for the Nazis. With his vision, the SS had more than 52,000 men. Himmler also introduced two key goals for the SS, which were “internal security and guardianship over racial purity” ("Heinrich Himmler-ushmm.org). Himmler also established the Security Service, which kept tabs on anyone who opposed Hitler, and also all other political parties and government officials. In 1934, the SD became the only “political intelligence gathering and evaluating agency in the Third Reich” (“Heinrich Himmler"-ushmm.org). After Himmler established the concentration camps, he also created the extermination camps. At these camps, millions of Jews were massacred. Himmler's camps not only exterminated the enemies of Germany, but also "provided workers and people for involuntary medical experiments"(Editors of Encyclodaedia). Himmler was tasked with eliminating the Soviets in 1941. He was also in charge of the campaign against the enemies of the Nazis, which consisted of racial and political enemies.
