After graduating, he applied to be in the German Navy, but was quickly declined for poor vision. However, he was accepted into the 11th Bavarian Infantry Regiment of the German Army. Although he served in World War I, he was discharged without seeing combat as a result of the Treaty of Versailles: the German army was drastically reduced following the signing. Ensuing his dismissal, he held many jobs, but remained obsessed with the military. Himmler earned an agricultural degree from the Technical University in Munich in 1922 and became employed as a laboratory assistant for a large fertilizer company. He later went on to marry Margarete Boden. The couple had one daughter together, though Margarete later adopted a son as well.
