In the short story, “The Killers” two of the main characters are Max and Al. They are both dressed in almost identical winter coats and they come in with attitude. They both are trying to order dinner when only breakfast was on the menu they continue to complain about the service. While they are inside of the diner they say some comment to George about how they are “Bright boys” they mean that as they are dumb and talk down to them because of their masculinity and power. Even though they are strangers and have never been in there before with any of these people their presence seems to take over the diner and they control the atmosphere. “Even when the situation of a story does not fall into one of these categories, it usually involves a desperate risk, and behind it is the shadow of ruin, physical or spiritual. As for the typical characters, they are usually tough men, experienced in the hard worlds they inhabit, and not obviously given to emotional display or sensitive shrinking (Bloom 39). Hemingway uses a lot of similarity in his stories and includes the same style, he uses a young character emerge and find his heroic self out of a tough situation. In this short story he used the darkness to set the scene in the beginning by saying “Outside it was getting dark. The streetlight came on outside the window” (Hemingway ). The word ‘dark’ is a clear description of the mood and foreshadowing something evil is coming. Darkness can also be a symbol of death and that is another one of the meanings behind Hemingway’s representation of light and dark imagery. Darkness and night can also be known as a time when bad people come out and this connects to the theme because as it stats getting dark two tough men carrying a weapon come out into a public place planning to kill someone. When the men finally leave they disappear into the darkness with their shotgun bulging out of Al’s overcoat and walk away with no care or worry about
