Heilig High School: A Short Story

I wondered why. Ever since I was a little, I always felt that I had lost something. I didn’t know what it was nor did I know when I lost it. All I knew was that I had lost something. Something precious, something important, something irreplaceable. I had lost something precious, important, and irreplaceable in my life. I knew that. I knew it very well. But, what exactly was that something?
One week had passed since I became a third year at Heilig High School, yet I still didn’t know the answer to that question. In fact, thinking of it only made me more and more confused. After all, I still had everything in my life. My parent was still working as hard as they could and my brother attended college in another city. I also still had friends who loved to chat and joke around with me whenever they can. Therefore, I should not feel this way.
I looked outside the window where several white clouds moved slowly together covering the blue sky and, sometime, the sun. However, after only several seconds, something a bit hard tapped my head. Out of curiosity, I looked up to see what it was that hit me. But, when I did, I saw Miss Hawkins, my

“No buts, either.” She stopped me, “You just have to see me later. Don’t try to run away or I will give you heavier punishment.”
“I understand.” I gave up, “I will meet you later at the office.”
After that Miss Hawkins continued her lesson and I started paying attention. I didn’t want to get scolded for the second time, so I had to do that. But, why did I have to go see her after school just because I wasn’t listening? Normally, whenever a student did not focus on the lesson, he or she would only receive a light warning. So, why was I different? There must be something on Miss Hawkins’ mind when she ordered me. I wonder what it was. Well, only one way to find it

In the article “The Little High School That Could: Teacher Urges Latinos into College-- and is Not Rehired.” Beverly Beyette discusses the controversy ; that surrounded George Shirley at Alisal High in Salinas, California. Shirley was an English and History teacher at Alisal High in 1986, and he is well remembered as the teacher who pushed Latino students into some of the most prestigious universities in the country including some Ivy League universities. This story swept the whole country by storm because Shirley did the unthinkable and got 72 of 84 students into great schools but was later terminated from his position at Alisal High and was not rehired, and this caused many problems because some believed Shirley was an unfit teacher for writing some of his student’s college essays others will argue and say he was a great teacher. I agree with those ; hence, who think Shirley was a great teacher because he actually did something for his student…

For three years, Father had refused the idea of leaving North Carolina. But my brother, Ben, sent us another letter, addressed as he always did to John Benjamin Wilks and Katie. In the letter Ben was praising his new farm, the richness of the land and how many more acres he was clearing. He told of the bountiful crops of corn and wheat that he would be reaping in a few weeks, more corn and wheat per acre than Father had ever gotten from our old worn out farm in North Carolina. He told of the abundance of water, game, and timber.…

    1. How will you fit The Prospect into your busy high school schedule? When will you do your assignments, and how will you complete your TP work on a particularly busy week? I'd like to say that I'm naturally adaptive to time-crunch situations. In junior year, I took on two internships that both had scheduled meetings, work agendas, and time-consuming projects.…

The double doors of Mason County High School soared open at three o 'clock on a sunny spring afternoon. School was out for the summer. Students darted out of the school like they were being chased by something colossal, repugnant, and petrifying. “Ouch!” wailed Tyra as she was pushed down by this gargantuan pack of mad wolves sprinting as if they had their eyes on prey. Tyra continued on, “The boys at this school are SO annoying and immature!”…

I laid there, numb of all feeling, buried my face into a pillow, and entered a deep state of depression. The feelings of confusion, anger, despair, and inconsolability stood over me as if they congealed into a being that constantly followed me. It was almost summer vacation at Roanoke High School. You could hear it through the hallways. All the chit chat, the excited squeaks, the groans for the day to be over. The sun was shining brightly onto the overwhelmed students who were filled with anticipation; longing for that sweet chime of a bell, announcing to them that they were free. Free of the anxiety, free of the drama, free of the constant work.…

I wake up at 6 in the morning, walk by my kitchen refusing to eat breakfast at 6:10, and pack my duffle bag by 6:35. After brushing my teeth at 6:50, I leave for school at 7 with my brother and my father. Classes begin at 7:35am and end at 2:12pm. Standing in the locker room changing my clothes and lacing up my shoes by 2:25, I remind myself why I put myself through this ritual every single day. The gym doors open at 2:30, when dozens of student athletes crowd the athletic directors office waiting for him to appear with the key.…

At that moment sunlight broke through a split in the clouds and thin brilliant rays fanned out pointing in every direction. It was then that a voice spoke deep inside me in a way I cannot describe on paper. I heard that voice with what I would call the ears of the heart. The voice was gentle, loving and strong. “You loved this girl but I loved her even before she was born and I loved her more in this life then you could ever love her.…

The situation I encountered is an experience I will not forget. Today it feels as if it was just yesterday, I went to Haines city high school. I attended the school all four years; I wouldn’t say I was a bad student. I always attended school but when it came to getting serious in class, I took it as a joke back then, I took everything as a joke, life hadn’t hit me yet, I was dumb and I didn’t realize at the time what consequences my actions would have. For example, senior year, I was eighteen at the time turning nineteen and most students would take senior year as crunch time to get everything done.…
