Mantsios Myth Of Hedonism

Improved Essays
Texas State is widely known for being a diverse university. It is a place where students

are encouraged to be themselves. College itself is supposed to be a time of independence and

individuality. Looking around campus, however, it seems that many students are more

interested in conforming than being individuals. Many choose to wear what’s “in style” or what

everyone else is wearing. Most students seem to believe that as long as they are like everyone

else, they will fit in. Society has taught us that the popular items, looks and styles are more

important than things that make us unique and special.

Vicarious living, according to Kendall, states that we watch other individuals live rather

that experiencing life for ourselves.

We live in what is

widely recognized as a consumer society. If we were all part of the middle class society, then

we would not be purchasing more to look like others who have more. The buying of

unnecessary items by people would stop, because they would not feel like they didn’t fit in.

Hedonistic consumerism is also discussed in Kendall’s essay. Hedonism, according to

Kendall, suggests some people are so caught up in consumerism that it becomes their reason

for existence and the primary thing that brings them happiness. This is a disturbingly common

thought process. Although many people claim the saying “money can’t buy happiness” is true,

many act as if they believe the opposite. We often tend to buy things thinking that we can’t be

happy unless we have that one particular object. Once we own that item, our happiness is

almost always temporary. We then lose interest and move our focus to the next great thing we

must buy in order to be happy. This is an on-going, never-ending cycle that happens all

throughout campus and even beyond

This is a myth because, going back to the definition of

hedonism, our society links success to money, not hard work, sacrifice, and perseverance. We

can see this all throughout campus and other universities because of how so many spend

money on the newest and greatest gadgets or name brand clothes. Society and social media

teach us our lives are not complete without certain

Walking in the first day, I was greeted by enthusiastic “scholars” as they are collectively referred to. These students have both challenged and furthered my analysis of the following philosophers-Martin Luther King Jr. and Thomas Hobbes. Throughout this reflection I will investigate further the experiences and people I have encountered thus far. Growing up I attended a private school. According to Kate Bornstein in “My New Gender Workbook,” when presented with the main characters of the movie WALL-E, “we consciously or unconsciously switch the gender mix to what delights us the most.” Although the makers of the movie don’t directly state the gender of either character, WALL-E and EVE, we rely on basic appearance cues to determine the gender we believe most fits them. The same is true for nonmetallic beings, humans, who construct intricate methods of yielding desired identities by means of clothing. While the gender of fictional characters, such as those in WALL-E, is determined by the properties of their metallic shells, humans have the tendency to assume the gender of other humans on the basis of their appearance carried…

Society’s Identity Theft Some people say that society doesn’t have an influence over how they dress or act. When you take a step back, you realize that society has actually taken away the idea of being who we truly are. They have advertised how to be the ‘perfect person’, but it doesn’t have to be like that. According to Ralph Waldo Emerson, “ to be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”…

The beauty and fashion industry are very well known for projecting beauty in the most unrealistic ways. This is the case of most beauty companies, many of them use the media to project a false sense of beauty in order to sell their products. The company is known for having very famous models representing the brand, who all promote the same body type: very tall and skinny bodies. Morggan Edelbrock’s Declaration of Independence From society's expectation for the way people should dress Society has their own visual on how everyone should dress. In my opinion, it's one of the biggest problems in society today. People need to stop harassing others for the way they dress. Many people get made fun of for not having “modern clothing”, wearing the newest shoes, or the most expensive jewelry. Not every child's parents buy them everything they want, many kids have one, two or even three jobs and they pay for their own clothing, shoes, jewelry etc.…

Our world always loved sucess. It is now remarquable that it is measured by the excellence of the things we buy. We can see that our society is becoming more and more materialistic. Money and material possessions does not lead to happiness because some people that are rich and have many nice things like cars and others could still be depressed. Also because someone could have money, but could also have a mental illness. For example, if a famous person is going through some metal problems and is not happy, but they still have money which is not making things better. Money could not buy friends for you to be happy and also family. This means that if you have real friends and family you wouldn't have to use your money to make them be your friend or family.…
