widely recognized as a consumer society. If we were all part of the middle class society, then
we would not be purchasing more to look like others who have more. The buying of
unnecessary items by people would stop, because they would not feel like they didn’t fit in.
Hedonistic consumerism is also discussed in Kendall’s essay. Hedonism, according to
Kendall, suggests some people are so caught up in consumerism that it becomes their reason
for existence and the primary thing that brings them happiness. This is a disturbingly common
thought process. Although many people claim the saying “money can’t buy happiness” is true,
many act as if they believe the opposite. We often tend to buy things thinking that we can’t be
happy unless we have that one particular object. Once we own that item, our happiness is
almost always temporary. We then lose interest and move our focus to the next great thing we
