Hector's Reflected Feelings

Hector seems rather upset and unsatisfied with his past positive behavior reinforcement chart. I would first want to address his dissatisfaction and anger by communicating that I heard and understood what he was saying. I would use the “Reflected Feelings” approach described in Gladding (2012) through implementing attending skills and reflective skills. Due to the group just beginning, I feel it would be important for the group to know that they are being heard and comprehended past their words. To implement this I would listen carefully to the student’s words and body language. I then would respond to the student by reflecting the thoughts and feeling the student expressed through his words, tone of voice, body posture, and gestures (Gladding, 2012). Through this I would be able to determine that we both understand what he is trying to say. In order for this group skill to be effective, it is essential that the group leader be able to accurately perceive what the student is experiencing and communicating. Due to Hector expressing dislike about reward charts, I would open this question up to the group by asking the group what their thoughts are about reward charts? In addition, I would like to see if Hector’s dislike of rewards charts is possibly his dislike of group. I would ask the group what their thoughts were about being in this group and their goals.
