Starting my Junior year in high school I was accepted onto the Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership Team (YLT). I had wanted to join the team since attending the Junior Leadership Conference (JLC) held by the team annually, when I was a 7th and 8th grader. The team is composed of twenty-two 4-H members, with their ages ranging from ages sixteen to twenty from across the state and three advisors. I enjoy the team for many reasons. My favorite reason for being on the team is the influence I have been able to have on youth across the state.…

I earned my first leadership role at the age of two. At that age, I became my sister’s role model. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.…

Communication is of essential importance in any workplace, relationship, and gathering, which creates efficient leadership within a group. Towards the closing of my junior year, I was elected to be one of the few student board members to my school’s National Honor Society. Achieving board member status for this renowned society of students is an eye-opening experience. Adapting to the responsibility that a highly respected board member carries of such a prestigious group truly distinguishes differences between the ordinary member and those who collectively lead the organization. From coordinating induction ceremonies for incoming members, to communicating with local providers for community service events, being a representative of…

I interviewed an African American coworker, or as it happened, was more a discussion about the current state of the inclusion of minorities in America and more specifically the inclusion of African Americans in the workforce. The coworker I interviewed is in his early 30s, an 11 year military veteran, and is currently working on his second masters, which is an MBA. As mentioned previously, he is of African American decent and the only minority working in our office, which is made up of twenty two white males. He was raised by his grandmother from a young age after his father left him and his mother was unable to care for him. I believe I did not fully apply all of my learning objectives while at the Wellness Center. One of my objectives was to increase the efficiency of the center by applying the knowledge I was going to be learning. Despite that I learned many theories and concepts about how organizations work, I was not able to make ample applications due to the lack of opportunities. One primary anticipation I had of the Wellness Center was to be given new job duties and responsibilities beyond what is given to ordinary student assistants. I believed that my experience and knowledge of three years would have given me an advantage for consideration.…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
