Heathers The Musical Essay

Plays and musicals often use costumes to portray certain characteristics or aspects of a character to give the audience insight and depth into the characters personality or life. Many popular productions in the United States have clear purpose for costume and makeup when it comes to the main characters. Musicals and plays like Heathers, Hamilton, Next to Normal use costume design in order to portray the characters wearing them through various mediums. Heathers is a musical written by Kevin Murphy and Laurence "Larry" O'Keefe in 2014 based on the film from 1989 (“Heathers the Musical (Musical) Plot & Characters”). Green is most commonly associated with envy or jealousy so it would make sense for Heather D. to be wearing this color (Fitzgerald, Tom and Marquez, Lorenzo). It is clear, through her actions (and costume) that she is jealous of Heather Chandler throughout the musical so her green represents the envy she has for wanting to be the leading Heather and in charge (Fitzgerald, Tom and Marquez, Lorenzo). After the first climactic scene in the musical in which Heather Chandler is murdered, Heather is seen at school wearing, not only the red scrunchie that belonged to Heather C., but an entirely red outfit, to show her satisfaction with having been put into power (Fitzgerald, Tom and Marquez,

Gatsby was notoriously known for his blind pursuit for Daisy, and Fitzgerald uses the literary techniques such as color symbolism and characterization to develop his story. Color symbolism was used when Gatsby sees the green light at Daisy and Tom’s house, indicating a longing or hope. But the color green can also symbolize a man, one of greedy nature, who is possessive and materialistic with a need to own people and things. We see that this is true as Gatsby demonstrates overt materialism just to get Daisy’s attention. And though it is true that the color green is associated with renewal and hope, it also often stands for both a lack of experience and need for growth.…

The film bravely takes on the topic of teenage suicide and the politics involved in climbing the social ladder. Winona Ryder portrays the smart yet cynical Veronica Sawyer, a junior at Westerberg High who has recently risen to the top.…

Since none of the girls knew what color silk they would be getting after being recruited to the factory, the color of each girl’s silk could represent their mood or emotion at the time. Green, the color of empowerment, correlates to the real life workers’ feelings once they decide to strike against the factory owners and take control of how they want the working conditions to be. It is also a sign of revitalization and renewal of how the factories were going to be, once Japan interacted with the rest of the world and came out of…

When professor mentioned that we would watch and discuss about a Broadway Musical show named ‘Memphis’, the first that came to my mind was, the actual city Memphis in the southern state of Tennessee. I was still confused as to how a city and its activities could be incorporated into a Musical show, which is assumed to be entertaining with melodramatic components, dance and music. I had an assumption that it would be academic, political, boring since it is to be watched in a classroom setting and that a professor would not choose something entertaining or something of the liking of the younger generation. I deduced that this play might touch the topic of race since race defined how a person is treated in most southern states. I assumed that…
