Heathers Production Analysis

On Friday, April 13th at 8 pm, I went to go see a production of Heathers. This production was put on by the Berklee musical theater club and took place at the Boston Center for the Arts' Plaza Theater located at 539 Tremont Street in Boston. The theater itself was a black box, which I found interesting because I have never seen a show, especially a large well known show, be put on in such a small space. The stage itself was in the middle of the room and had no curtains. The pit of musicians from the Boston Conservatory were set up behind the simple and short stage. Throughout the performance, the actors made good use of this space and overall I felt more connected to the production since they were very close to where I was sitting. The musical itself eventually moved to Off-Broadway in 2014. The story of Heathers focuses on a girl named Veronica Sawyer who desperately wants to fit in in her high school. In order to do this, she becomes friends with three popular girls in school named the Heathers (who all have the first name of Heather, appropriately). By offering to write them hall passes and prescription slips, she slips herself into the popular crowd while finding herself torn between making friends with toxic people or continuing her friendship with her best friend from kindergarten who is seen as the laughing stock of the school. Veronica also finds herself falling in love with a guy who recently moved to Westerburg High named J.D. after the Heathers threaten to ruin Veronica's reputation when she tries to defend her friend, Martha, at a party, Veronica goes to J.D.'s house and hooks up with him. Veronica and J.D. become a couple after this and Veronica quickly finds herself wrapped up in more than she can handle. While trying to make amends with Heather Chandler the next day by helping her with a hangover, J.D. places toxic drain cleaner in one of two cups. Veronica grabs the wrong cup, accidentally kills Heather, and fakes a suicide note to cover up the murder. This trend occurs throughout the musical, where J.D. becomes more insistent on killing everyone in Westerburg that

Furthermore, the stage setup was utilized well. With the stage in the middle, they had three sides of audience seats that surrounded the stage. I thought this set up made the play more interactive and able to focus on the main character more closely. The lighting for this play was used effectively as well.…

The costume and makeup with the production made me feel that the year is 1980 with the skirts, side ponytail, the letterman jackets the jocks wore with the straight legged pants, the make up with the bold colors, blush, big hair and bright lipstick. I also like the choreography because it reminded me of a Madonna pop video, I love the dance moves that was used in each scene. The aesthetic that was shown was the way the Heathers was dress: Heather Chandler wore red because it represent of her evil is all lust for power and blood, Heather Duke wears green to represent her wickedness and jealously, and Heather McNamara wears yellow because of her innocence. The costume designer aesthetic was making a conscious choice of making the costumes match the character’s personality. Amanda liked the doll house look for the stage production.…

Comparing a live theater to watching a musical on film, live musicals offer a different atmospheric experience. This is done by the way actors feeding off the energy from the audience during applause, are in a way interacting with characters, creating a sense of connection with the characters, and can feel the music around you. On the contrary movie musicals being able to have technical advancement, every scene of the film is reshoot until it is perfect, film makers can make the audience become absorbed to the screen, and lastly right in the action, not seeing it from a distance. There were no negatives to the musical Curtain because the actors all were in touch with their characters and everyone in the audience was engaged in the show. Also, the songs were catchy and singing was…

Heathers, a 1988 cult classic you may hear mentioned as the big sister to Mean Girls or Clueless. However, it takes on far raunchier topics than your typical high-school drama. Forget pretty in pink, this dark comedy is beautiful in black and far more sadistic than its successors. The film bravely takes on the topic of teenage suicide and the politics involved in climbing the social ladder. Winona Ryder portrays the smart yet cynical Veronica Sawyer, a junior at Westerberg High who has recently risen to the top.…

Other communications can be seen through the use of accent lighting, polished wall and floor finishes, and individual seating, which enhances the art of perception and directs people’s behaviors during the performance. Within the little theater, group membership and friendship formation is also created between the performer and audience, which is supported through the use of mystery and complexity and arousal of the performance. This designed space uses musical instruments, a hanging tapestry, and the use of task and accent lighting to sets a sophisticated mood, while the elements do not distract from the connection between the audience and…

I was not looking forward to seeing URINETOWN THE MUSICAL because I was tired from working all day and I really thought it was going to be a boring musical to watch. I expected that the musical would be set in the past around 1950s and it would be confusing for the audience to relate to. When I walked into the Philip Lynch Theatre I was surprised that the theatre was a thrust stage with two floors of seating. The main floor seats were all filled but the balcony seating was empty. The first thing that you noticed when you walked into the lobby was a wall that had a quote that covered the entire wall.…

This Stony Brook University performance was the first time I was exposed to any performance, so throughout the concert, there were many things that stuck out to me. The first thing that stuck out to me was the dress code. Upon arrival, I was surprised by dozens in very formal outfits. Once I was in the auditorium I did notice that there were indeed no phones, people talking or people eating. I saw the pride and excitement in some of the families faces as the performance began.…

The actors had a lot of energy that undoubtedly captured the viewer’s attention. Each actor had a certain characteristic that made him or her truly fascinating to watch. They were able to interact with each and every audience member. This left me, a viewer, who was in the middle of the room, feeling as though I was in the play. The plays story may have been their biggest obstacle, however.…

Right from the beginning of the performance, you could tell the actors and actresses had worked hard. The play started with a huge fight scene which seemed like it included fifteen people throwing dramatized punches at others eventually leaving many lying deceased on the stage floor. The use of the thrust stage really allowed the audience to view the emotion of the actors. Where I sat in the front row of the stage right risers, I personally felt like I was sitting in the middle of the stage, which I loved! Many of the scenes happened right in front of my face and some of the actors even interacted with some of us sitting in the front row.…
