Character motivation in Wuthering Heights The novel Wuthering Heights, written by Emily Bronte, is a story that is based off of revenge. The plot depends on the constant effects of revenge to have conflict occurring so often. The vengeance shows from the very start of the plot to the end and reoccurs every time another successful plan happens. It is so needed for Heathcliff, that the revenge continues for 2 generations. His whole life becomes based off of trying to make others feel bad, that eventually it backfires. The thought of getting revenge on the characters starts as soon as the novel starts with a backflash on the childhood of Heathcliff and Hindley. Heathcliff was an orphan and Hindley disliked that he got more attention from Mr.Earnshaw

The first thing he does is to marry Edgar Linton’s sister, Isabella. Heathcliff then takes possession of Wuthering Heights by winning a bet that Hindley lost by gambling while drunk. That makes him in charge of Wuthering Heights just like he planned. He denies Hindley’s son, Hareton, of education, just like Hindley did to Heathcliff after Mr.Earnshaw passed away. Heathcliff had successfully came back and completed his plan of revenge, so you would think that he would finally be satisfied. With making revenge his main thinking point and his daily motivation, he realizes he is still not happy. Even though he had accomplished what he’s been working on, he is miserable. He realizes that revenge shouldn’t of been so important to him and that it taking over his life was just stupid. The novel has a captivating and useful theme that anyone can take into consideration. Heathcliff could of accomplished so many things, but instead of focusing on productive actions, he tried to reenact the actions of people who hurt him before. This way of thinking basically ruined his life by taking over. People reading the novel can take the plot into consideration when thinking about revenge to realize that it most likely will not make anything better for you, therefore making revenge
