The importance of having a chain of command is having responsibility and authority. It assigns duties and each category has someone who they report to like personal accommodations or other issues. For example, Ventura’s Sheriff department has a main head, which is the sheriff (Geof Dean), and following under is an undersheriff who he reports to in regards for the rest of the department. There were multiple attempts to consolidate the two agencies in efforts to decrease the amount of tax payer dollars allocated to public service and to increase the effectiveness and efficiently of their service performance.…

On March 16th, 2011 the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) Civil Rights Division released an Investigation of the New Orleans Police Department. The scathing report found that too many officers within the Department lacked regard to constitutional policing; that respect for the civil rights and dignity of the people of New Orleans has been absent (Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, 2011). Additionally, the report found that those officers are just the tip of the iceberg of a much more structural deficiency within the organization. The constitutional violations found were rooted in how officers were recruited, trained, supervised, and held accountable (Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, 2011).…

A standard of conduct required by the Hawai’i Police Department is officers are forbidden from accepting gifts, gratuities, or anything of value either directly or indirectly based on an officer’s position with the police department (Kubojiri, 2016). I do not fully disagree with this policy, however I believe exceptions should be allowed. As the chief of police, I enact the policies for my department. Some of my thought-process is based on previous experiences. For example, in the U.S. Coast Guard, gifts and gratuities were allowed as long as the dollar value was less than twenty dollars ($20) and was not in the form of cash.…

As a Chief of Police, one would have to determine what does the department they head up stand for? Who does it represent and what are the essential purposes for the agency. With that information, the values and missions adopted will guide the action of all the officers that comprise the department (Cordner, 2016). This is a tremendous responsibility put on the Chief because it’s critical the values and missions remain the main focus and not be overcome by other unofficial purposes (Cordner, 2016). I believe the most important missions include the protection of life and property, enforcing the laws, developing and maintaining a positive relationship with the local community, and to create an atmosphere of safety.…

As police are looked to as having a higher moral and ethical to follow, then as the people they protect, lays in the foundation of professionalism that stems from the morals and ethical behavior of the officer’s attitude, in who they protect. Law enforcement individual’s ethics is that of moral principles, or as values that officers are held to a higher standard in both work and home (Belasic, 2010). As each person has their own moral values, as an officer the moral value needs to be as a whole, with to “maintain incorruptible integrity.” (Belasic, 2010, p. 1) However, ethics is from moral standards as an individual has learnt from others (Ortmeier, 2006).…
