The purpose of this experiment is to investigate the heart rate through the dive reflex Homeostasis is the body’s ability to maintain and balance its normal body function in varying conditions. The autonomic nervous system relates to the peripheral nervous system. Its objective is to sustain homeostasis of the visceral organs. In this investigation we will observe the mammalian diving reflex, which implicates the autonomic nervous system. In mammals, immersing the face in water initiates numerous physiological reactions that exploit the time that can be completed under water. This involves a decreasing of heart rate and peripheral vasoconstriction. The reflex arc is as per the following: the trigeminal nerve of the face, nose, and mouth intellects the cold temperature of the water, transmits this material to the brainstem, which then …show more content…
As the water sets to the right temperature using the thermometer subject is ready to under go experimental investigation 7. Subject sits down while getting the resting heart rate 8. Subject submerges face in water for 30 seconds while someone records heart rate and data 9. The data analysed, displays when subjects face is in the water for a long period of time the heart rate constantly drops. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the conditions of the heart through the diving reflex. two subjects underwent an experimental trial where we investigated the heart rate through the the dive reflex. We found that the heart rate decreased when faces were immersed in icy cold water. This means that the heart can pump blood much slower when submerged in water meaning that the person can stay underwater for longer for longer of period of
