The Heart Of Darkness by Joseph Conrad is a book with many hidden representations of humanity and power. On the surface is a framed story of a man telling his shipmates of his times in the Congo free state and the horrors he faced while there. But when you dig deeper you realize the story is about the corruption of man when exposed to power. The story shines a light on the trifles of the times as well as how man with total power become detached from every form of society and its normal decorum. Before he arrives people warn him about how it will be and how even normal men “change”. Marlow first arrives and realizes that the congo is much different than he expects the men do not work and they all seem “hollow”. Marlow’s ship was snagged on a rock and his view of the congo changes drastically and he almost fell into the virus that plagued the congo, temptation, greed, power these three factors are the disease of humanity that was amplified by the congo. Conrads also very good at using the environment as a major charter creating a tension between the reader the characters and the environment.
