A blank can be defined in various ways. It can be defined as a situation, belief, or idea that reduces people to nothing more than inferior objects. I have been a blank space only a few times in my life. All of these experiences resulted in personal growth and maturity .Similar to the perceptions of condescending individuals who deemed minorities of African descent as inferior in Heart of Darkness and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. At Camp A, I was reduced from an individual to a caricature of an African American with amoral values because of faulty reasoning and stereotypes. As the distance increased, the work environment became more and more hostile. First, it was small things like low, overheard taunts about my style of dress and quiet demeanor that slowly grew to whispers of racial slurs and epithets throughout the week. I tucked the insults away and did not want them to ruin my experience. To tell an authority figure would be succumbing to weakness, I would remain defiant and strong till the end because words were absolutely abstract and could not hurt me. Two days before my departure, I surrendered my defiance and told another counselor of a rival group about my “dilemma” when she asked me did I enjoy camp. An hour later, I was informed that the situation was cleared up and would not continue. As the week of camp drew to a close, my roommates grew quiet and more resentful. I was ready to go home. On the day of my departure, my father learned from the counselor that I told my problem to about my situation and decided to have a conference with the head director. “Listen, George. I talked with the other girls . They reported that it was all in good fun .They are decent girls, and it is entirely possible that Rachel is just stretching the truth.” said Mr. William. He failed or neglected to talk to me or hear any side of my story. Well-behaved girls that he had known since they were toddlers did not use slurs, and I had to be lying. My father grew angry and asked to speak to the coordinator of youth services. After a brief confrontation, it was revealed that he even lied to her about his overseeing of my situation. We left, and I learned that Mr. William was never able to become head director of a youth camp ever again. He already had other experiences with mishandlings with minorities with

While the process of travel is fairly simple, there are many motives for why people travel. In stories such as Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conradt, The Destination by Wang Anyi and Return to a Certain Darkness by Satendra Nandan, travel is a constant theme. While the protagonists, Marlow, Chen Xin and Nandan similarly travel around the world, their motives are not constant. They choose to travel for both personal and political reasons while gaining a larger understanding why their travel is important.…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

A Sign That Changed Perspectives Wing’s Chips” is a short story by Mavis Gallant with a very meaningful message. The theme I felt the short story carried was that even though many people have different views on what is right or wrong, they want to be respected and accepted for who they are. “Wing’s Chips” focus is on three separate cultures, who in the end learned to respect each other. I feel as though many people could relate to this story if they have been racially discriminated against. The story is based on young girl and her father from England who go to spend a summer in a rural French-Canadian Quebec town.…

It can be said that within the core of every human being, lies a certain amount of darkness. While this is true, it can also be said that this internal darkness can only surface given the right opportunity and within the right environment. However, once this darkness does manage to emerge, its force is powerful enough to destroy the very part of us that makes us human. This darkness and evilness of man is a prominent theme reflected in the setting, plot structure, and characterization of Joseph Conrad’s, Heart of Darkness and Oscar Wilde’s, The Picture of Dorian Gray.…

He was an improved specimen; he could fire up a vertical boiler...and what he knew was this - that should the water in that transparent thing disappear, the evil spirit inside the boiler would get angry through the greatness of his thirst, and take a terrible vengeance.” (Conrad 45) Throughout much of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, there lurks a theme of Marlow’s, and Kurtz’s, perceived superiority.…

Heart of Darkness and Things Fall Apart shows the apparent ways that Joseph Conrad and Chinua Achebe differ in ways of presenting Africa in the colonization era. Conrad and Achebe books shows the difference between an Afrocentric and Eurocentric viewpoint. Joseph Conrad’s depictions of the Africans as savages an in a very racist undertone causes Chinua Achebe to write Things Fall Apart through the viewpoint of the natives of different tribes to show Africans, not as uncivilized savages, but as members of a very hierarchy society that is not too much different from the Europeans. One way Conrad’s views about Europeans to make the look as if they were higher beings to the African tribes was in his description of Marlow.…
