Heart Of A Teacher: Identity And Integrity

Improved Essays
This weeks reading brought out a lot of emotions for me. I thought a lot about my experiences while growing up. I did a lot of self-reflection while doing the Tema Okun reading, which really stood out to me. I thought a lot about where I am on the ladder and how I am on a few of the ladder steps. I also thought about where I would like to see myself on the ladder. The other reading called The Heart of a Teacher: Identity and Integrity in teaching allowed me to understand who I am as a person. Parker (2007) argues that good teaching requires teachers to bring who they are as a person into their teaching. In my practicum this semester I began by allowing the students to get to know me. I really showed the students who I am as a person and that

The readings in this class were quite interesting and made me view different situations from someone else’s perspective. With all the books and stories we were responsible for this class, I connected to three wonderful stories for two particular reasons. As a young doctor, and doctor in general, there will be times when you develop a strong attachment towards a patient that may affect you mentally or a patient comes in with symptoms that are not recognizable. When I become a doctor, I always worried how I would react under pressure and whether I would become too emotionally attached to my patient; that is why I connected to The Scalpel and the Silver Bear, From the Heart and My Own Country, short stories from the book A Life in Medicine. These…

Amy Cuddy interpretation of the nonverbal, physical ways that people compose themselves was informative and interesting. I agree that when people mentally and physically open themselves up to others, it is a clear reflection of their confidence. I liked that she compared humans to the animals in the wild, providing an example of birds opening their wings compared to celebrities reaching out with their arms. As an observer to see a leader hunched over is far less reassuring than one that is standing tall and embracing the crowd.…

There are many connections between the three readings that we used in class mainly between Mr. Cater in “I Ain’t Writin’ Nuttin’”, Maya in “No Kinda Sense” and Malcolm X’s experience with his “Homemade Education” autobiography . The people that the readings are focusing on all deal with them trying to find a sense of self, understanding who they are and how they play a role or the propose in their individual situations. They each go through their own story that test their ability to adapt or handle an environment with external life factors that they are not used to, where people around them effect their self-esteem and identity. Dealing with their obstacles forces them to open their minds and experience a change of fixed mindset (where people…

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Braken is a book of loyalty, adventure, trust, friendship, self-sacrifice and even fear. The author wants us to believe that though some journeys are dangerous, involving sacrifice, even if they’re not what you had hoped, it’s not about what happens at the end, it’s about the very journey itself. Ruby Daly is the main character of this book, along with Liam “Lee”, Charles or “Chubs” and Suzume or “Zu.” In the beginning of this book, Ruby was trapped inside of a camp for 6 years of her life, being treated like she was less than human until she finally had the chance to escape, a worker of the camp revealing their true identity, helping Ruby escape. Even throughout the beginning the book, it was evident that the journey that the main character was about to face was one where she would find her true self, where she belonged,…

The journey of learning more about myself and understanding who I am as a person has been an upward climb. Most times it felt as though learning who I am was similar to attempting to ride a unicycle up the side of a steep mountain, with rocks rolling down along the way knocking me off of my path. However, as I have examined and reflected on who I am as a learner and how I learn, I have been able to gain a greater understanding of who I am as a person. This paper will examine the growth that I have experienced as a learner, how Baxter Magolda’s journey of self-authorship, the role of moral mentors, vocational theories, and spiritual development theories have impacted me as a learner, and how this knowledge will impact my remanding time in the…

In-class reading response After reading aloud my personal essay for the fifth time, I felt I was well prepared for the next in class reading. I made a final check for any unmarked grammatical errors that I should avoid during my reading. During class, my classmates—who had an in-class reading— had a distinctive tone that reflected their emotions. Some had a casual and laid-back tone that invited the reader to relax and enjoy hearing their personal memoir or essay read out loud.…
