Heart Community Service

For this project, I volunteered at Sacred Heart Community Center serving the poor in the community around me. I packaged food into bags to give out to those who needed it, then sorted clothes onto different racks in order to give out clothes to people who needed them the next day. This would allow them to focus on more important matters, such as paying for other necessities or trying to better their lives, and would help give them the same opportunities afforded to me. I picked this service because it impacted those in communities close to me, and thus I was able to make a change that I could see and feel.

Before my service, I was excited to work at Sacred Heart, as I have worked there before and had made many meaningful connections with different people. During my

Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.’” Matthew shows us the importance of helping others in need, and how we are blessed by God in doing so. He tells us that God is present in every one of His children, and that by helping others we are seeing the image of Him in them. In return for the good work done in His name, we are granted our own kingdom. This passage invites everyone to see God in everyone, and to serve those in need to help lift them up. Matthew’s words relate to my work because they show me that we should always help those in need, and that everyone is equal in God’s eyes and is made in the image of God. This means that I should treat them as equals and do everything in my power to give them what they need to succeed. I was able to help do this by packing bags of food to give out to people who need them so that they could have warm meals that

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

I was able to volunteer at a local bank that was sponsoring the Lake Park Elementary School for the holiday season. The school has over 300 underprivileged students between the ages of kindergarten and fifth grade. Most of the students at that school only have one meal per day. Along with other volunteers, I packaged bags that contained candy, toys, toiletries, a blanket, and a pair of athletic shoes. The bags were able to provide the children with goods that we often take for granted.…

My project consisted of attending a worship service different than that my own. I chose to follow a friend to a non-denominational sect of religion at a local church called, Iglesia Cristiana Misericordia in Laredo, Texas. This opportunity was chosen because I had made a promise to my friend to at least attend one service to see the differences between the traditional Roman Catholic services compared to this non-denominational service. At the very beginning I was rather apprehensive because of my original upbringing to Catholicism and the fact that I was attending service I was not familiar with.…

We spent a whole day at my school doing simple tasks such as garden cleaning, moving old furniture, covering graffiti, repainting old walls and stairwells. In the end, volunteering had a huge impact not only on me but also the community around me. It enabled me to connect with my community and make my school a better place. I realized that helping out with the simplest and smallest tasks can make a drastic difference in society. If we were to lose physical space, people would surrender their desire to obtain public good.…

True and significant life is found in Jesus Christ and because of my firm conviction of this it has been my primary objective to point people to Jesus. Being persuaded that Christ wants Christians and especially those who take leadership roles to minister to the needs of others, I have ordered my life to conform to that conviction. Ultimately, Jesus desires that each Christian serves him by serving others; this is accomplished in a variety of ways – feeding those who are hungry, teaching everyone the life saving Gospel, and by leading in a way that reflects the glory of Christ. It has been my immense pleasure to have had the opportunity to preach God’s Word to thousands of people over the past fifteen years. It is my sincere passion to see people embrace Christ Jesus as their Lord and savior and to be transformed by the renewing of their minds through the Word of God.…
