I have worked at Kids In Action daycare for almost two years now. Being hands on with these children, I have been able to learn more than I have ever anticipated. I work with children ages five to twelve, which is a wide age range to build a connection with each one.
On one particular day, I felt touched by one of my older students. Her name is Shannon and she was ten years old at the time and was always outgoing and having fun. I noticed this one specific day she was not herself. She sat at the table amongst her friends and ate her afternoon snack quietly. I observed for a minute or two until I decided she needed someone to talk to. As I approached her, I thought to myself how I would handle the situation. I asked her to come into the hallway with me for a second to ask what was going on, that’s when I saw her eyes fill with tears. I then explained to her that I had been in a similar situation to the one she was now going through. I didn’t go into detail with her, even though she had opened up to me. I conveyed as much comfort as I could to Shannon, knowing that losing a loved one is very difficult to talk about aloud. Around her age, I lost my aunt unexpectedly and experiencing this pain allowed me to show her love and care in such an emotional state of being. Although it was not due to the same situation, I can assure that it hurt just as much.
