Michael who is an only child and is five years of age entering the school setting for the first time as a kindergartener has recently been diagnosed with hearing loss and a speech disorder. He convenes with a speech therapist 3x a week because he hasn’t learned to speak properly. His parents are worried about his placement in school and wants for him to be evaluated by a Psychologist because of their concern of their son not being able to make friends and their deep concern of his education level; Michael hasn’t displayed any progress in learning letters or numbers. Other concerns of the parent are they do not want Michael labeled and want him to have education take place in a regular classroom setting.

Michaels hearing disorder can be considered a Cultural difference for him because members of the Deaf community share a common language and social practices (Heward, 2013).
A disadvantaged student has the greatest challenge in education. Michaels social and culture gap can be bridged by providing a safe and enjoyable environment for him, making sure that the teacher is well- diverse and trained in handling a disability of this nature. The teacher can also explain to the students in the class what deafness is, how to be accepting regardless of differences and to be understanding. The classroom can also be prepared in a way that would be easier for him to see faces.
His parents can go to the neighbors and explain to the other children’s parents the difficulties Michael is having and maybe it can be a joint effort between neighbors and family to educate the other children about deafness and since they live in the same neighborhood and are still young in age, can grow together with an understanding and protective friendships. Michael and his parents can also take sign language classes together. Since its difficulty for him outside the deaf culture, they might have a better understanding of what he goes through every day.
