Type 2 diabetes has been shown to be closely associated with frequent consumption of soda or sugary beverages. There has been a substantial increase in drinking of sugary beverages, in particular soda, in the United States for the last two decades. Parents tend to give their toddlers or older children juice boxes and not realize the ingredients may be harmful to them and can cause them damage later in life. Eleven studies, with over 300,000 participants, from the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) found that the chances of developing type 2 diabetes increases by 15% as a result of drinking just one serving of a sugary drink a day (Harvard para 5). Furthermore, one of the HSPH 's researchers mentioned that soda consumption and the risk of diabetes have a relationship of cause and effect when you consider a similar relationship is forged between sugary beverages and weight gain and the fact that type 2 diabetes is often related to weight gain (Harvard para 6).
