Healthy Relationships In Romeo And Juliet

A relationship is the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected, or the state of being connected. There are many healthy and unhealthy relationships in the play Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet is a classic play about two star crossed lovers, whose relationship can be put up for debate if it’s healthy or not. A relationship that certainly is healthy in this play is Romeo and Mercutio. Romeo and Mercutio are best friends who would do anything for each other. Romeo was challenged by Tybalt to a fight. Mercutio is suggesting he step in for Romeo instead because he wants to help out his friend. “O calm, dishonourable, vile submission! ‘Alla stoccata’ carries it away. Tybalt you rat-catcher, will you walk?” (Shakespeare 35) Mercutio is so loyal to Romeo that he is willing to fight for him. Romeo needed help, so Mercutio stepped in and did just that. Romeo and Mercutio were joking around and Mercutio thinks this is better for Romeo to do than mope around. Mercutio thinks Romeo looks funny crying over love and he should joke around more. “Why, is not this better now than groaning for love? Now art thou sociable, now art thou Romeo; now art what thou art, by art as well as by nature. For this drivelling love is like a great natural, that runs lolling up and down to hide his bauble in a hole.” (Shakespeare 27) Romeo and Mercutio have a friendship where they can joke around with each other, but still learn things from their jokes. Mercutio still manages to make fun of Romeo and give him advice at the same time. In relationships you want to be able to joke around with one another, but you want to learn from each other as well.
