Healthy People 2020’s goal is to, “Prevent human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and related illness and death” (2014, p. 1). Specific goals to reduce new HIV infections are; “reduce the number of new HIV diagnoses, reduce the number of new HIV infections among adolescents and adults, and reduce the rate or HIV transmission among adolescents and adults.” According to the Healthy People 2020 objective HIV-1 reduce new HIV infections, the Healthy People 2020 target is 32,855 persons and the number of people newly diagnosed in 2010 was 44,497.
