Two key components to the changing healthcare industry are the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and Healthy People 2020 (HP2020). According to Fielding, Teutsch, and Koh (2012) the ACA allows for increased access to healthcare while protecting the customers. Healthy People 2020 increases awareness of health issues and healthy behaviors to the general population. In addition, the ACA strengthens HP2020 by integrating health and wellness into its preventative measures. (Fielding, Teutsch, & Koh, 2012).
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) was put into law in 2010. The ACA was meant to make healthcare accessible to all United States Citizens by lowering monthly premium costs, allowing any pre-existing condition to get coverage, and by expanding the scope of health care professionals (?). In addition to increased accessibility, the ACA includes guidelines for preventative healthcare. Free preventative care includes OB-GYN services, birth control, and emergency room visits even when made out of network (cite). The ACA provides a national marketplace where customers can go to shop for insurance plans. Additionally, all employers with fifty or more employees are required to provide health insurance or risk facing a fine.

By increasing science and evidence based practice OTs can solidify their necessity in the healthcare field. Expanding OT influence will help increase collaboration with other fields, this will in turn strengthen OTs need in the medical field. In addition, the more science and evidence that is done, the larger the customer demand will become and the greater the influence OT will have in the health field. Since OT main goal is to faciliatate independent living through health and wellness education, it only seems fitting that OTs would be leading the charge with the new HP2020 as well as the ACA.
