We have all seen her, and perhaps we have all been her.
She’s the girl on Instagram who has it all together—she’s smiling in every picture, and her hair is always on point. She’s the epitome of perfection to the naked eye. We see the shallow, happy days of her life, when things are going well— when she and her boyfriend are on great terms and he’s decided to finally treat her right. What we don’t see are the nights she cries herself to sleep because she feels fat and ugly, and there’s nothing she can do about the genes she’s been given. Her worth and value are always in question, while she wonders if she will ever truly be happy with herself and her relationships. But…she has an iPhone, and it has a camera.

You will learn the intimate details of my past, and how I overcame painful obstacles. You will read about healthy dating, God’s love for you, how to free yourself from the past, and how to discover who you really are. My only request is that you take your time, reading slowly so that you take it all in. As a matter of fact, if you did not purchase the journal to go with this book, make sure you at least have a journal or notebook of some sort as you read. You will be given writing and art assignments as you move throughout this book. The purpose of such tasks is to give you a deeper understanding of what I’m talking about, as well as to make it more personal for you and your life.
Finally, keep in mind that this is truly a journey. You will not arrive overnight. You will not become a perfectly confident girl who never has any issues by the time you finish reading this book. My hope, however, is that you at least get going in the right direction. We are going to address some touchy subjects, but they are all necessary for your growth. Do not be hard on yourself during the process, and whatever you do, please don’t give up. God has not given up on you, and He never will. With that…let the journey

When you read John Paul Titlow’s essay ”Me: Instagram Narcissism and the Scourge of the Selfie,” people like to believe that looking through someones account or at their information, might be going too far. Some might not think anything about it because the site allows people to post certain posts, pictures, quotes, and videos. People enjoy to let everyone know how they feel and think. When scrolling through Instagram the users might have several thoughts such as: “#please #stop #hashtagging #every #word #in #the #English #vocabulary”, “I should probably get off Instagram and get out of bed already.…

No one has lived a perfect past, but the way we go about when dealing with the past determines the fate of our future. One’s painful past is often an impediment on their physical and mental state for the rest of one’s life, ultimately resulting in a loss of any future potential and sense of self-worth. In Annie Proulx’s novel, The Shipping News, the main character, Quoyle, experiences an abusive past of which he believes he’s at fault for. As Quoyle’s journey through adulthood is expressed in this novel, Proulx demonstrates the pain of the past lingers on one’s present ultimately devaluing one’s sense of self-worth and clouding their view of any positive future, but revisiting the past and confronting the issues at hand will relieve this existing pain. Quoyle’s abusive past, which was inflicted upon him by Petal and his father, led him to devalue his self-worth. When Petal, Quoyle’s abusive wife, died he was unable to move on from her death.…

When I first read The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell, I was incredibly intrigued by the notions presented throughout the book. It intuitively makes sense that changes will add up over time to a significant change; after all, “Rome was not built in a day.” However, throughout this book Gladwell explores the counterintuitive concept about the foundation of epidemics. He realizes that epidemics are not caused by long term change, but rather by the combination of common factors found in almost all epidemics. Before I read this book, I led a fairly introverted and reserved life in order to focus more on my studies.…

Schnarch: Becoming a Self As I inquire about what it takes to become a satisfied woman, I am discovering satisfaction comes from within and it requires an individual to have a strong core self. From a developmental perspective, Dr. David Schnarch explores the process of the emerging self in his book Intimacy & Desire. He writes about the importance of developing a solid flexible self rather than relying on others to make you feel okay. He thinks the first emerged self was a “reflected sense of self” meaning a self that is reliant on feedback from others.…

Writer and Author, Mary Karr, in her book, “The Liars’ Club”, recounts her life through her turbulent and troubled childhood all the way to finding out her mother has other children the family was unaware of in her young adulthood. Karr uses vivid imagery and vibrant descriptions to summarize a portion of her life into a novel that could be described as if she was right there talking to you. She relates to the reader very well in an easy to comprehend way. I chose to read this memoir because of the summary I read when I was researching which book to read that detailed all of the problems in the author’s life, such as sexual assault, a “Nervous” mother, and a dysfunctional family. Finding myself interested by these issues, I chose to read…

The use of social media causes negative body image in women and can contribute to eating disorders. With 400 million users on Instagram, 316 million users on Twitter and 1.23 billion users on FaceBook, as of 2015, society has adapted to a world controlled and manipulated by social media (“Global Social Network by Users 2015”). We have become a society fully dependant on the idea that there is such thing a as the perfect girl, and we idolize her until one day who we see on a magazine cover is who we see in our reflection. As stated in The Media Affects a Teen's Body Image by Stacy Zeiger, “According to the Center for a New American Dream, children and teens are exposed to over 25,000 ads in a year.” This being broken down even further in the article titled Media, Quit Marketing "Ideal Beauty” to Teens, “the average girl has about 180 minutes of media exposure every day.” This gives plenty of time for marketers to make their impression and sell their must-have product. Unfortunately, however, has the sales increase for the companies, the actual greater negative effect…

Teen dating should be discouraged because of the amount of peer pressure and the higher risks associated with it. To begin with, in the article “Teen Dating Doomed to Fail,” the author claims that teen boys often feel pressure to have sex which “may result in boys coercing girls… to have sex when they are not ready”(6). Thus, teens who date can be forced into something they don’t want to do showing immaturity. In order to help prevent peer pressure from spreading, teens should not form romantic relationships until later in life. Furthermore, in a survey reported in a medical journal in the article, victims of sexual abuse are more likely to “become pregnant use illegal drugs, and... to attempt suicide”(“Young” 1).…

CPT Samuel O. Fadare III L200 Essay-Crucible Experience Granting someone the ability to gain insight into the complexities of a singular moment in time that was a key transformational experience takes courage especially if that event was associated with weakness or failure. On the flipside however, is the opportunity to overcome those fears of exposure by being open and candid with oneself, with hopes that something from the experience can be analyzed and used to not only gain self-awareness but be used as an example or a cautionary tale for others, whether as the protagonist, antagonist or supplementary character. As I thought about my event, something I heard years ago came to mind, wheat people and rice people, I hope that in this stream of consciousness I will shed light onto how I overcame a significant challenge, furthermore how I will use this experience to influence others an organizational-level leader as I intertwine my crucible with lessons learned.
