An important part of the healthcare staff’s responsibilities encompasses an assurance of patient safety and their well being while under hospital supervision.The Joint Commission 's National Safety Goal is to improve the effectiveness of communication among caregivers and to demand some form of standardization in respect to handoff communication (Reisenberg, 2012). Consequently, the assurance of welfare of all patients must be of the highest priority for all employees, and should not be exclusive to only those who are directly involved in patient care. Hence, it is important to include every entity that has a viable stake in the quality of healthcare. These people, known as stakeholders represent providers, payers, employers, and patients.

According to Provision 2 of the American Nurses Association (n.d.), the nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient, whether it be an individual, family, group or community. Thus, it is the responsibility of all nurses to keep up-to-date with the most current patient safety innovations, as well as revise old policies, and implement new patient safety techniques when an opportunity presents itself. “The Institute of Medicine [IOM] reported that inadequate handoffs are where safety often fails first” (As cited in Riesenberg, 2012, p.4). Accordingly, assurance of the highest possible quality of care shall be of top priority to the healthcare professionals across all disciplines.
