An important part of healthcare staff’s responsibilities encompasses an assurance of patients’ safety and well being while under hospital supervision. According to Provision 2 of the American Nurses Association (n.d.), the nurse’s primary commitment is to the patient, whether it be an individual, family, group or community. Thus, it is the responsibility of all nurses to keep up-to-date with the most current patient safety innovations, as well as revise old policies, and implement new patient safety techniques when an opportunity presents itself. “The Institute of Medicine [IOM] reported that inadequate handoffs are where safety often fails first” (As cited in Riesenberg, 2012, p.4).
