The purpose of this paper is to examine healthcare reform implementation in the state of Ohio. Healthcare reform has been the subject of much criticism since the Obama healthcare bill became law in 2010. It has changed the landscape of the healthcare system for the entire country.
Healthcare Reform Overview
We are recognized by other countries for our technological advancements in medicine, but still criticized for the high cost of healthcare (Nies & McEwen, 2015). Many plans were too costly for families to afford compared to their previous coverage through their employers. The Marketplace based plans on income and created large deductibles making it impossible for families to afford routine health care.
Economics in Healthcare The effects of health care reform on the economics in health care of Ohio have been mostly bad for the economy. The effects come straight from the negative outcomes. People lost their jobs, which is lost income and health insurance for their family. Employers cut hours to eliminate offering health coverage, which is also lost income and health insurance. The ACS lowered Medicaid reimbursement, forcing health systems to decrease their budget causing decreased staff and quality care. In the outpatient setting physicians are forced to see more patients in less time. In conclusion, healthcare reform implementation has affected the entire health delivery system in our country. Therefore, community nurses need to be aware of how the ACA has changed how health care is delivered negatively and positively. The health care team needs to find resources to help with insurance coverage so quality care can still be given. Health care reform will continue to change and evolve with each presidential
