Health Information Exchange In Healthcare

Over the last few years, health care industry has gone through major changes related to health care& health related data. From implementation of an electronic health record system (EHR) to transition to ICD-10, health care industry is constantly advancing and implementing new strategies to provide quality patient care. Prior to the implementation of an electronic health record system, patient data was entirely paper-based, stored in files and folders which was not only time consuming but also prone to low quality patient care. The movement of this data is completely secured through the use of passwords and every movement is being tracked which not only avoids fraudulent activities and behavior but also ensures patient safety. The concept of health information exchange was around for almost two decades; however, HIE project was supported and funded by the Agency for Healthcare Quality and Research (AHRQ) in 2004, under the supervision of President George W. Bush. The purpose of HIE is to ensure quality care, reduced costs, ensure fewer errors, decreased duplicate tests and records, more accurate and timely clinical research and improved population health. This integrated exchange of clinical information is carried between health care organization, facilities and stakeholders securely following HIPAA protocols and standards. The purpose of HIO is to provide organizational infrastructure, legal underpinnings, and technical expertise to enable HIE. They focus on HIE related job opportunities that help facilitate the Health Exchange process. In order to exchange data securely, organizations need personnel with numerous skills, education and training related to securely flow data across the country. HIO not only focus on secure data exchange, but also the staffing needs of an organization who is involved in Health Information Exchange.
