The healthcare industry integrates several sectors of an economy with the aim of providing curative, preventive and rehabilitative care products and services. The healthcare providers include institutions such as hospitals or individuals such as nurses, doctors, midwives and they provide health care services to individuals or communities at large (Swayne et al., 2013). This paper examines the past, present, and future of the health care industry regarding technology, finance, and economics.
Past Changes in the Healthcare Industry
Previously, several changes have occurred regarding healthcare. The health institutions have the obligation to serve every citizen. There are new ways of diagnosing diseases, performing surgical operations and monitoring patients. Waiting periods have drastically reduced as hospitals have adopted measures to keep many patients outside the hospital. Now, patients can have surgeries performed on an outpatient basis. Nowadays, it is possible for patients to receive dialysis treatments in their homes. In recent years, nurse practitioners have emerged and have enabled doctors primarily focused on hospitalized clients. The practitioners help in diagnosis and authorizing prescriptions like doctors (Swayne et al., 2013).
