I have chosen to pursue a career in healthcare administration at Kaplan University. As with everything, one must first understand what to learn before learning it. To start my pursuit, I will need to gain an understanding of the career. In this paper, I will examine both the career and my goals within the career. I will do this in two parts: firstly, I will look at an overview of the career, the educational requirements, and the personality traits needed for the career. I will then establish my own career goals and how Kaplan University Career Center can help me reach them. Once I understand this I can envision where I will be in five years. Firstly, let us look at an overview of healthcare administration. The Bureau of Labor Statistic says …show more content…
For nursing home administrators, a license is need, but for other health administration jobs a license may only be need for specific jobs in specific states (BLS 2015.) The American Health Information Management Association also offers a certification as a Registered Health Information Administrator, which is another step forward for a healthcare administrator (AHIMA 2017.) Another important aspect of starting the journey of a new career is to look at the personality traits and skill sets that are needed for the job. Some skills that will be necessary are computer skills such as Microsoft Office and medical software, communication skills, problem solving, business, and basic understanding of healthcare laws. Personality traits needed for the job include leadership, flexibility, independence, and teamwork (My Next Move.) The Career Center will be important because it can help me sharpen my networking skills to build a strong network which is crucial in finding a job post-graduation from Kaplan. The Center also reviews resumes and cover letters, and offers support in the job hunt which will all help in securing my job goals and my future once I complete my program of study at Kaplan. Finally, I would like to outline my five-year goal. In five years, I hope be a few years graduated from Kaplan and employed with a company that shares my values and leaves room for job growth and personal development. I also hope to be working on or starting a master’s program so I can continue working on becoming a better healthcare administrator. I hope to find a company that will help with the expenses of furthering my education. In conclusion, the healthcare administration field is a great field to enter. Having reviewed the job outlooks, educational requirements, and skills and personality traits required, I believe I will not only fit will within the field but I will also have plenty of room for growth and development in my field, both professionally and personally. Examining my goals and how Kaplan can help me reach them reassures me that I am on the right path moving forward. There is much to learn in the field, but I look forward to learning
