Health Technician Reflection

The significance of this experience is that this situation was one of the most challenging experiences I have encountered in my role as a Behavior Health Technician. By virtue of the patient being nonverbal and artistic, I felt incompetent and was unsure of how to help the patient, which put us both in vulnerable positions. I felt anxious as well as frustrated about not being able to help. Although, I tried to focus on the client’s needs, his behavior was too problematic. This experience challenged my personal viewpoints, my professionalism, and my values as a social worker. Before working with this individual, I assumed all I had to do was to apply a little determination and helping clients would be inevitable. However, because of this experience

In another circumstance, I had the opportunity to sit down and hear another patient’s story. This patient shared her beliefs on how she felt it was outrageous for her to be admitted to this unit. The anger in her voice was evident, while she was speaking. She stated multiple times that she was fine and the psychiatrist was simply punishing her by keeping her here on the unit. I later found out that this patient was admitted for an attempted suicide, as a result of an overdose.…

The theoretical propositions state that “disadvantaged and oppressed clients often mistrust helping professionals”, “client change occurs through a collaborative helping relationship”, and that “relationships are built on trust” (Poulin, 2010, p.46). This implies that as I meet with Artie for the first time, I must present myself as a professional social worker who is there to help him. I must maintain the core social work values in everything I do with Artie. It is important to see Artie’s strengths and not look down on him as a kid with a father in jail. I will listen to Artie, show genuine interest in him, and discover his goals in order to offer assistance to him in ways that will help him achieve his goals.…

I first became interested in counseling when I was helping a friend with serious drug related problems and family problems seek help and counsel from advisors. Being just sixteen, I didn’t know how to help him efficiently and felt both powerless and helpless at trying to find adequate resources and services to help him deal with his problems. While I did eventually find counseling services and potential help for him, the effects of his psychological problems were so brutal that he committed suicide. This profound experience of losing a close friend to suicide forced me to develop a strong interest into understanding the role, guidance and motivations that leads people to such extremes. At this point, I had already cultivated the desire to…

Coming into this course there were certain elements of the course content that I have experienced in the past, or are ongoing experiences, that I have had the opportunity to further reflect on with the aid of the course readings and in-class discussions; there were some elements I did not know about or had not really thought about in this practical way before this course and have added to my social work toolbox; and there were some elements that I already knew of and furthered and/or clarified my knowledge and understanding throughout the semester. I have used these three components to explore how my perceptions of involuntary clients and my practice in this area have evolved because of this course. A. Elements of the course content that I…

For my future occupation I have decided that I want to become a Medical Laboratory Technician or MLT for short. Most people that work in this field work in the laboratory of a hospital, however, you can also work in medical researching facilities and doctor’s offices as well with this degree. This job requires you to “collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances.” By doing these steps you will be able to figure out what bacteria or other microbodies are making someone sick and then you can send your results back to the doctor or nurse so that they can treat the patient properly. Currently, I am not sure what I will specialize in as a MLT, however, I hope to figure that out once I get hands on experience…
