The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Health Report Card (LDHH, 2015, “Health Findings of Major Diseases”) ranked Louisiana 46th out of 50th in cardiovascular-related deaths and stroke-related deaths. At this rank, there were approximately 307.5 cardiovascular and stroke-related deaths per 100,000 people in Louisiana in 2014 (LDHH, 2015, “Health Findings of Major Diseases”). Heart disease was looked upon as the number one killer of Louisianans in 2007, with a recorded 9, 947 deaths (LDHH, 2010, “Heart Disease and Stroke in DHH Region 1”, para. 1). In 2007, Jefferson Parish, a part of region one, had a record 24.1% of cardiac deaths or 1,703 deaths (LDHH, 2010, “Heart Disease and Stroke in DHH Region 1”, para. 2).
