Like every child, I went through the ubiquitous “why” stage where I posed this question even to the smallest, most mundane events of life. Filled with genuine curiosity and fascination, I desired to understand the ornate workings of the world. Unlike the majority of children, however, I did not lose this fervor and drive to find answers. This inquisitiveness laid the foundation for my interest in research work. Growing up, my family placed a tremendous emphasis on health, fitness, and nutrition.
This background cultivated my interests in these areas. From an early age, I appreciated the value of living a health-conscious lifestyle. However, when my sister, Melissa, began to struggle with an eating disorder, I saw the detrimental effects

I sought to understand this illness in an academic light and explore the tortuous and intricate nature of eating disorders and the various methods of treatment. But when presented with the hackneyed question “what do you want to do when you grow up?”, I would answer with such a confident and specific plan that it would take adults and my peers by surprise. They often did not take me seriously and continually told me that my interests were bound to deviate. However, my interest has only deepened, grown, and …show more content…

Desiring for me to receive the best education possible, my parents made great sacrifices to put me through private school from the very beginning of my schooling. I have been so fortune to receive a quality education, but I do not intend for myself to be the only person that will benefit. I understand that when a person is given an abundance of opportunities, more is expected from them. My Hispanic grandparents came from a culture where it was not typical to receive higher education. They did not attend school past the 8th grade, which caused them to value education to an even greater degree than most. Therefore, they were extremely proud and supportive of my father who was the oldest child and first family member to attend college and received his degree from a prestigious

All throughout high school, I was pretty much drowned with, force-fed this information of, ‘Oh, you [students] are supposed to do better because you’re Hispanic, and everyone else won’t generalize you by saying Hispanics don’t succeed or whatever.’ So we were supposed to go beyond that. But even though [the school administration] kept telling us this all four years, ‘You have to graduate, you have to go to a four-year university’ and things like that, more than half of the school doesn’t graduate. So [students] know and they see how their parents are struggling, and they know that because of what the school tells us, education is the way out of hardship, but they still are way too lazy to do anything, and they settle for being like their parents.…

As a health conscious individual and as a health and social care student, my enthusiasm has always been geared towards good health, particularly on the impact of nutrition on reinforcing and maintaining quality health. The rise in nutrition related issues, such as obesity, demonstrates the increasing need of nutritionists and dietitians in providing guidance on this matter and reaching out to individuals who require guidance, especially as I believe that nutrition related illnesses result not only in physical ailments, but affect one’s mental health too. Aiming to become a qualified practitioner in this field, I am aware of the importance of particular skills such as communication and interpersonal skills, especially as I will be required…
