Along with her mother, she followed the nurse into another room wondering what cream this doctor will prescribe her. She has been to the Walk-in Clinic before for the rashes on her arms. Each time, a different doctor recommended a distinct cream to treat eczema, even after she stated she has no history. After months of applying the cream, to her lack of surprise, none of them worked. Convinced that her arms will always be this way, only her father’s insistence another physician will prescribe something effective brought her back.

Throughout undergrad, two courses with this philosophy influenced and ensured my interest in practicing medicine. The Health Promotion course focused on the preventative approach to illness. Medicine today focuses full emphasis on rehabilitative practices. However, I perceive implementation of Health Promotion and advocacy approaches to be as important in medicine to prevent the onset of illness altogether. Last year, my 47-year-old father received test results with high cholesterol. Next visit, his cholesterol increased further. In response to my father's expressed concerns each time, his doctor laughed and denied any reason for concern. Nonetheless, with a change in lifestyle, my father's cholesterol returned to normal. I believe, advising preventative tools earlier compared to waiting until an issue arises is far more effective, and yields better improvements in Quality of Life in the
